May 1, 2008 — A hearty “Well played!” to the other lacrosse team in Cambridge, Mass.

The Engineers of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology last night won their very first New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference postseason women’s lacrosse tournament game with a 13-12 result against Wheaton College.

It’s one of dozens of games that have been played the last week and a half leading to the postseason, but I think there’s a nice story coming out of this team, located along the banks of the Charles River, next to a bridge measured in Smoots.

You see, the MIT women’s laxers have only three available substitutes — depending on turnout year by year, that can be seen as an improvement.

The team also does not have a permanent head coach: the current coach, Vanessa Cox, is one of the all-time greats from the University of Vermont, but is labeled as an interim head coach on the university’s website.

Cox, of course, has much the same situation that all of her peers in Division III face: having to build a team from non-scholarship players from different backgrounds and regions.

Add the high-rigor, high-pressure competitive environment, and you understand MIT’s annual difficulty in building a good program.

But now, you can call the Engineers winners.
