May 13, 2008 — From the smallest division comes the biggest story

Over the weekend, championships in the three divisions of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) girls’ lacrosse league were contested.

As expected, undefeated Bel Air John Carroll (Md.) won the “A”-flight championship, defeating Owings Mills McDonough (Md.) 11-6, and undefeated Owings Mills Garrison Forest (Md.) beat The Park School of Baltimore (Md.), 13-10 for the “B”-flight championship.

The “C” flight, however, had the best story. Laurel St. Vincent Pallotti (Md.) is only in its third season of existence, and is one of only four girls’ lacrosse programs in Prince George’s County (Bowie, Bladensburg Elizabeth Seton, and Greenbelt Eleanor Roosevelt are the others).

Head coach Jill Lasheski had the team prepared for an absolute monster of a season: the Panthers scored 93 goals in their first five games of the season.

There was one loss sprinkled in that span: a 11-9 loss to Baltimore (Md.) Lutheran in extra time.

Lutheran, the two-time defending “C”-flight champions, beat Pallotti 12-11 in late April’s reverse fixture, on the heels of the team’s worst defeat of the season, a 14-6 loss to Elizabeth Seton.

But when St. Vincent Pallotti and Baltimore Lutheran met in the championship game over the weekend, the Panthers were ready to pounce. Pallotti took an early five-goal lead and hung on to beat Lutheran 12-10.

I guess the Jim Davis First Law of Field Hockey applies to lacrosse, too.
