June 15, 2009 — Americans 3, Italians 1

Today’s result in the FIFA Confederations Cup saw Italy defeat the United States 3-1, but two of the Italian goals were scored by American-born player Giuseppe Rossi.

Of course, as I’ve written in this blog before, the concept of nationhood amongst athletes can be a very fungible thing. Start with Becky Hammon’s decision to play for the Russian women’s basketball team in the 2006 Olympics, or for the efforts to get Argentina-born Marina DiGiacomo to play for the U.S. field hockey team, or how the U.S. men’s soccer team has built itself with many foreign-born players — from Joe Gaetjens to Earnie Stewart to Freddy Adu and Josimere Altidore — since 1950.

That fungible concept of nationhood will be on display starting this week at the FIL Women’s World Cup. A number of foreign nationals dot rosters such as Canada and Ireland, and the Haudenosaunee team has players from native lands in the United States and Canada.

Amongst some of the eye-openers when it comes to Americans on other FIL rosters is Allison Hubschmann, a former Georgetown star who is playing for the Czech Republic; former Maryland goalie Alex Kahoe, who is suiting up for Ireland; and Abbey Friend, the 16-year-old sensation who is playing for Canada.
