July 31, 2010 — Helping out

A national scholastic website recently posted an article unscientifically naming the cities in the United States which were the best for a particular high-school sport.

Baltimore was named for both boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, Los Angeles was given the title for boys’ basketball (really? Better than New York?), and Boston was given the title for boys’ ice hockey (even over Minneapolis or Madison).

One glaring omission was any mention of the sport of field hockey. What American city is the best high-school field hockey town?

Given some of the selections made to various U.S. national teams over the last month or so, I think the current best metropolitan area is Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, Pa. The region features Mountain Top Crestwood (Pa.), Lehman Lake-Lehman (Pa.), Plymouth Wyoming Valley West (Pa.), Kingston Wyoming Seminary (Pa.), Wilkes-Barre Coughlin (Pa.), and Dallas (Pa.), all of which have gone deep into the postseason over the last decade.

And in the last month, 10 athletes have been selected to United States national teams on both the men’s and women’s sides. Pretty impressive.
