Feb. 11, 2011 — Lacrosse benefits from an unkind cut
After a vigorous campaign and not-very-veiled Title IX threats, the women’s lacrosse team, along with the women’s gymnastics team and the best men’s collegiate rugby club going have been reinstated at the University of California, Berkeley.
About the only disappointment in today’s announcement by Chancellor Robert Birgineau is that the baseball team, which had been in operation for more than a century, will play its final season this spring.
I was kind of hoping that the University of California would have to backtrack — but all the way to status quo ante.
I guess the prospect of a women’s lacrosse colossus-to-be at Southern Cal was too big to ignore.
