Feb. 19, 2011 — The sleeping giant in Baltimore

On June 6, 2008, the women’s lacrosse world vibrated with the news that Jen Adams, the finest female lacrosse player who ever lived, was taking the head coaching job at Loyola University Maryland.

The team has been solid her first two seasons, winning 22 games and losing 13. The Hounds did not make an NCAA Tournament, but had some good results against NCAA-bound teams like Virginia, Syracuse, and Towson.

This afternoon, Loyola opened its season at Ridley Athletic Complex with a 15-8 win over Virginia. It’s not an insignificant result, given the fact that the Greyhounds have some experienced players at key positions such as attacker Grace Gavin and close defender Kellye Gallagher.

It’s a team to watch, definitely — but the twist in the Loyola season this year is that the key game of the entire season is a prime-time matchup at home. On April 29, Loyola welcomes Final Four participant Syracuse to the Ridley Complex for what should be a firecracker of a game.
