Feb. 20, 2011 — Coming of age
This evening, the United States senior women’s national team will meet Argentina for the third time this month.
The stakes are high — not as high as when the teams are expected to meet in the Pan American Games later this year in Guadalajara, but it’s a chance for the United States to come out of its two four-nations tournaments feeling as though they have a psychological advantage.
The last two times the U.S. met the Albicelestes, Argentina took a 5-0 win in Mendoza, and a 4-1 win in Rosario.
But the Americans’ skills and abilities, on full display against the Australia Hockeyroos, should give the U.S. supporters some home. The U.S., in defeating Australia 3-1, scored a pair of goals on Claire Laubach dragflicks. In addition, the team got a goal from Paige Selenski, who could be playing her way onto the Pan Am Games roster.
Now, it’s been a half-decade since the Americans beat Argentina in the March to Madrid in College Park, Md. It’s going to take the same kind of effort the U.S. showed that afternoon in order to win this four-nations tournament.
