March 11, 2011 — The enormity

I got a message from a social networking site this morning from an exchange student who went to my high school:

The translation: “I’m scared.”

My friend and her family are in Tokyo and, for the moment, safe.

But as we’ve seen today in the horrendous pictures, not everyone in Japan is. One video shows a line of brackish water and tumbling debris steamrolling over a solar farm, heading towards a roadway with cars traversing it. Fire in the city of Kesennuma is lighting up the night skies. There has been a cellular outage so profound that dozens of people are lining up for a few seconds on a public pay phone. Water is tossing around cars, homes, and even a warehouse the size of an athletic field like so many toys.

Please send your prayers and well-wishes to everyone affected by today’s devastating earthquake and tsunami.

And you can also help by sending a $10 donation to the Red Cross. Text REDCROSS to 90999. After their missions in Haiti, China, Indonesia, and northern Africa the last few years, they need all the help they can get.
