April 21, 2011 — A voice from the past

Today’s Game of the Day
Oregon City (Ore.) at Lake Oswego Lakeridge (Ore.)
One year ago, Oregon City won the state championship, but two of its losses were to Lakeridge. The Pioneers are 11-0 on their current campaign and already have a 14-5 win over the Pacers.

I picked up the phone at my father’s house two nights ago. A sweet voice with a Southern accent met my ears.

It was my godmother, who I have not talked to in several decades.

It was her husband who arranged to have my father moved under cover of darkness from the dangerous racial tensions of southern Mississippi where the police was basically in cahoots with Klan radicals.

It was only about 12 minutes, but it was great to hear her voice after all that’s happened the last four weeks. We’ve thought about her when we visited the Tennessee village where our family would spend summer vacations while my father continued his religious education, but we weren’t able to find out where she was.

That changed after a call I made to her son’s answering machine yesterday afternoon. I’m thankful I had a chance to talk to her; hopefully, it won’t be the last.
