March 5, 2012 — The early surprise on the North Shore

Today’s Game of the Day
Lake Worth Park Vista (Fla.) at Wellington (Fla.)
Wellington is averaging about 15 goals per game this season. But they have also been yielding as many. Today’s challenge is holding off a determined Park Vista team which lost 11-7 last time out.

There is an undefeated NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse team which is scoring more than 15 goals per game this season, has a coach with several national championships, players with several national titles to their resume, and a victory over an American Lacrosse Conference team in 2012.

But it isn’t Northwestern. Instead, it’s Stony Brook.

Joe Spallina has gotten the Seawolves out to a 5-0 start this season, and today starts a very tough stretch of matches. Today, it’s a game at Duke, followed by road games at Florida and at Maryland.

Now, when you have three matches in a row against Top 5 opponents, the pundits wouldn’t be altogether incorrect in believing that the Wolves won’t come out of this two-week stretch undefeated.

Stranger things have happened, but I’ve seen what Spallina has done at Adelphi, and he’s got that team believing. Keep an eye out for this team.
