March 7, 2012 — The wrong determination
Today’s Game of the Day
Apex (N.C.) at Chapel Hill (N.C.)
The defending state champions are looking to extend their run against Chapel Hill High School, but I think the Tigers are going to be up for this challenge.
A couple of days ago, we outlined what could be a crisis in collegiate field hockey in Canada. The abrupt decision of the University of Alberta to eliminate field hockey is now throwing the sport into disarray. With only three teams in Canada West, the conference is now below its minimum needed to hold a league season. That could force changes in the eastern half of the country, which has seen its membership dwindle as well.
The justification, as reported the Canadian University Press, was stunning: the lack of success of the women’s national team at the recent Olympic qualifiers.
“The reason we were given was that (athletic director Ian) Reade is not satisfied with the success of field hockey in Canada as a country,” fifth-year forward Toni Almhjell told CUP.
If that was a justification, how many athletic activities would see a zeroing-out in their budgets?
I’ll let you, my readers, think about that one.
