March 14, 2012 — In the Post

Today’s Game of the Day
Washington Georgetown Visitation (D.C.) at Alexandria Bishop Ireton (Va.)
The Cubs visit Ireton’s cozy campus off Route 7 looking to get their campaign off to a good start.

In my travels in the worlds of lacrosse and field hockey, I have run into people who have had the same first and last names who played lacrosse within five miles of each other.

In Maryland, amongs the field hockey programs are North East (Md.) and Pasadena Northeast (Md.). In New Jersey, you have a Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) and a Glen Gardner Voorhees (N.J.). In Pennsylvania, you have Springfields in Delaware County and in Montgomery County.

So, when I saw a lead paragraph this evening involving Division II women’s mainstay Southern Connecticut State, I did a double-take:

Four different players recorded four goals, as the Southern Connecticut State University women’s lacrosse team doubled up Post, 22-11, in a non-conference game.

Post?

Not C.W. Post, I thought. A team, coached by former Maryland star Meghan McNamara to the Final Four, could never be 10-goalled. They’re too good.

It took me a second to figure out that Southern Connecticut State was playing against Post University, a small liberal arts college in Waterbury, Conn.

Jill Kowalik is the third-year head coach of the Eagles, and she has pulled together a diverse group of players, including a junior-college transfer, a student-athlete from Canada, and a junior who prepped at a magnet school for health care which doesn’t have lacrosse.

It’s an interesting group and one which could make some Division II waves before too long.
