March 17, 2012 — Georgetown 9, North Carolina 8
Today’s Game of the Day
Chantilly (Va.) at Annandale (Va.)
One year ago, Chantilly lost to Oakton (Va.) in the Northern Regional semifinals. Tina Plaugher’s crew looks to start off well against a spunky Annandale side.
FULL TIME Thanks for tuning in this afternoon.
FULL TIME Georgetown won this game because, quite simply, they wanted it more and, frankly, needed it more. The Hoyas had dropped their three previous games — to Florida, Duke, and Hopkins — and needed some serious RPI cred for the tournament committee
FULL TIME And the Hoyas storm the field, winning the game 9-8!
59:58 The answer is “no!” Lynch’s FP from the left-center hash hits the post and the ball bounds clear!
59:56 Carolina gets a fortunate blocking foul with a chance to tie at the end! Lynch converted to end the first half; can she get a second buzzer-beater?
59:49 Just like that, Black with a poor outlet pass and Carolina gets the ball at the 35 with a chance to send the game to extra time
59:00 Georgetown runs down the clock, but is running it backwards and letting the defense and goalie kill the clock instead of doing it in the attack end; a turnover in the back third of the field could be an absolute disaster
57:20 Freedman wins the draw to herself and Georgetown will run the stall
57:18 GU GOAL Sophia Thomas with the all-important goal and the Hoyas up 9-8!
56:00 Heels have a FP on the right and hits goalie Black, who collects and distributes the rebound
55:00 UNC is being deliberate here and Georgetown knows the stall is coming
54:24 GU FP and GOAL Dina Jackson from the right hash and it’s 8-8! What a game!
53:20 Ball is worked to Georgetown’s Sophie Thomas cutting at a deep angle on the left wing. Her shot attempt misses high
52:23 Timeout, Georgetown
51:30 … only to lose the ball over the end line
51:00 Lynch on the dodge and it is saved by goalie Barb Black, Georgetown clears …
50:00 The Tar Heels aren’t trying to stall, are they?
48:50 Carolina wins the draw and is very deliberate here
48:39 Timeout, UNC
48:39 GU FP and GOAL Franklin from the left-center hash and the Hoyas are within one!
47:43 GU GOAL Freedman skies it high over UNC goalie Lauren Maksym; is this the spark the Hoyas need for a late comeback?
44:19 UNC GOAL Lynch makes three deft fakes and inserts the ball over the line; the game looks like child’s play to her. The Tar Heels lead 8-5
38:19 GU YELLOW Megan Marinelli with a check to the head
34:53 UNC GOAL Lynch with a simple wheelaround from behind the cage; Heels up 7-5
34:11 GU FP and GOAL Franklin from the left hash and the deficit is one
33:33 UNC YELLOW Sloane Serpe is off the pitch for the Heels
30:00 The second half is under way
HALFTIME Georgetown is shutting off Lynch, but has no answers for Friend and Cannizzaro, who have been brilliant thus far
HALFTIME Carolina is having a much more difficult time than most would expect, but Ricky Fried, the head coach of the U.S. national team, is getting the most out of his team right now
HALFTIME The horn sounds with the Tar Heels leading 6-4
29:58 UNC FP and GOAL Becky Lynch from the far left hash
27:00 Carolina looks content to hold for one shot
25:59 UNC GOAL Friend, after about three minutes of holding the ball, give the Heels a 5-4 lead
17:00 UNC GOAL Cannizzaro’s feed converted nicely by Taylor George
16:00 Timeout, UNC
16:00 GU GOAL Kristen Coleman stakes Georgetown to a 4-3 lead, just like that!
15:35 GU GOAL Erin Lovett cuts down the middle of the UNC fan and equalizes! We’re tied 3-3 and it’s all to play for
13:40 GU GOAL Franklin, with the sides back to even strength, fires in an ankle-high shot and the deficit is one
11:23 GU YELLOW Freedman is out for two minutes; losing her and her height (5-foot-10) would be catastrophic for the Hoyas in the center of the park
10:46 UNC GOAL Laura Zimmerman rifles it top shelf; Carolina passed it smartly out of Georgetown’s doubling
9:29 GU GOAL Hannah Franklin answers for the hosts
5:45 On a well-worked play, Georgetown’s Kelsi Bozek hits the post!
4:38 UNC GOAL Friend again from the left wing, converting a Cannizzaro feed
2:59 UNC GOAL Abbey Friend with an nice catch and finish deep in the fan
2:30 Hustle play; Kara Cannizzaro loses the ball on a shot attempt and runs back 60 yards to dispossess Georgetown center Kelyn Freedman
0:00 The game is on
PREGAME North Carolina are wearing powder-blue jerseys with white numbers and navy trim, while Georgetown is wearing gray tops, blue numbers, and white trim. The teams looks remarkably alike in terms of contrast (as opposed to color) value; I thought one team was required to wear white and the other a dark color
PREGAME The teams are warming up on the turf, under sunny skies in the nation’s capital, with temperatures in the mid-60s
PREGAME While a loss today will not derail North Carolina’s postseason aspirations, a defeat here would be deadly for the Hoyas. Right now they are teetering on the edge of the at-large pool of teams likely to be selected to the NCAA Tournament. A loss here would mean Georgetown would likely have to win the Big East Tournament to secure the league’s AQ berth
PREGAME Georgetown has lost its last three games after winning its first two. Last time out, in a loss to Johns Hopkins, the Hoyas went 0-for-8 on 8-meter free positions
PREGAME Carolina is a team which has been a lock for a Final Four berth the last few seasons, but ran into a Northwestern buzz saw in the 2009 final, and have not made the championship game since
PREGAME Georgetown is led by a pair of superb underclasswomen in junior Dina Jackson and freshman Caroline Tauzian
PREGAME UNC is led by seniors Becky Lynch and Laura Zimmerman, and sophomore Abbey Friend is showing the form that made her one of the top recruits in the country a few years ago
PREGAME Hello, and welcome to Multi-Sport Field on the campus of Georgetown University for this women’s lacrosse game featuring the No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels and the host Hoyas, who are 14th in one poll and 15th in another
