Serving the scholastic field hockey and lacrosse community since 1998

June 24, 2024 — A green-lit project

The game of field hockey is set to make a rare appearance on the silver spring.

According to Lehigh Valley News, a pair of Bethlehem, Pa. filmmakers, Koula Sossiadis Kazista and Katina Sossiadis, have had a script greenlit for a field hockey movie called The Next Play.

It has been rare for a movie on the subject of field hockey has been made. One such film, Chak De! India, was an absolute sensation in 2007, earning more than $27 million worldwide — an astounding figure for a Bollywood film of the era. The Indian film industry would go on to release two field hockey-themed productions in 2018 — Gold and Sooma.

There have been field hockey plot points in some entertainment products, such as The Gilmore Girls, black-ish, and the original 1976 film Freaky Friday.

But have a look at the website for the production of The Next Play. The synopsis could have been taken from some of the most recent years of the game, with players having to deal with not only their opponents, but pressure from parents, coaches, and even teammates.

Now, we don’t know whether the finished product will have a major theatrical release, play mostly in the reparatory space, or find itself on a streaming service. But a well-constructed field hockey movie will, I think, be worth your time.
