Nov. 6, 2006 — One of the last puzzle pieces

Katie O’Donnell, the fine attacking midfielder who made the U.S. senior national team in 2005 at the age of 17, has made her verbal commitment to the University of Maryland, has confirmed.

O’Donnell is one of a number of key components in the recruiting Class of 2011. Now that she’s locked in, other pieces of the recruiting puzzle now should fall into place.

Predictably, most of the top recruits are committed to ACC schools. O’Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa.) and Meghan Dean (Marathon, N.Y.) will wear the red and black of Maryland. Katelyn Falgowski (Landesburg, Pa.), Michelle Drummonds (Elkton, Md.) and Meghan Dawson (Berlin, N.J.) will highlight the University of North Carolina recruiting class, and Casey Beyel (Ocean City, N.J.) is headed for Duke.

But for my money, the two big plums were Falgowski (20 caps) and O’Donnell (24), both of whom played on the senior national team level in high school.

Their presence will only raise the price of poker in games between UNC and Maryland, and has raised the level of competition in the ACC even higher than it already is.
