Dec. 5, 2006 — An exercise in fundraising and focus

A few weeks ago, we detailed how an email pen-pal of mine was entered in a half-marathon in Memphis to raise funds for the St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Jennifer did it in a shade under 3 1/4 hours.

But what was just as important was her engagement. She writes: “The emcee made the ’30 seconds to race time’ announcement and Jason began making a little announcement of his own as I began to try to clear my head — reminding myself that this (constant chatter and forced movement from the center of the course) is why I run alone.

“I heard Jason say something along the lines of ‘Well, Jennifer, we’re about to start this race and this day is also the start of our new lives together…I love you…I want to spend the rest of my life with you…’ there were some other sweet things that I didn’t quite catch because the race was about to start and being the darling man that Jason is, he is constantly saying sweet things like that.

“What he isn’t constantly doing is taking a knee at the precise moment that 9,000 runners are ready to flood the town of Memphis — I was convinced he would be trampled and feared for his safety…being the genius that I am, it finally dawned on me that he was proposing!  (I never claimed to be the brightest crayon in the box!)  In all of the excitement of the race starting and me pulling him up to save him from the crowd, he never even heard my answer, which I believe was ‘Yes, of course!’  Poor guy, he thought I just took the ring (which is a whole other story) and started the race!”

Now, that’s focus.
