May 6, 2007 — Bracket Buster II

This afternoon in Princeton, N.J., was one of the best regular-season games of 2007 — in quality of play, character development, and implications.

On the day, Princeton defeated Georgetown 12-11 in a matchup of two teams looking to make the best possible showings for selection to the NCAA Tournament.

Coming into last week, Georgetown was ranked six slots ahead of Princeton in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll, and was ranked nine slots ahead in the RPI rankings. But after the game,  the LaxPower RPI rankings moved Princeton closer, but not ahead, of Georgetown.

This, of course, leads to a no-win situation for the NCAA Division I Tournament Committee, who needs to weigh all sorts of criteria for the selection of at-large teams.

But yesterday’s match was all about the competition. Note who the leading shot-takers and goal-scorers were for each team: two former U-19 World Cup teammates in Georgetown’s Coco Stanwick and Princeton’s Kathleen Miller.

I’d hate to find out Monday night that either of them have played their final collegiate game.
