May 28, 2010 — Maryland 14, Syracuse 5

POSTGAME Hogan’s foul on Mollison may be a talking point far beyond this game. How can the rules of the game protect a field player from a fully-padded goalkeeper in similar situations?

POSTGAME Syracuse made a run in the last 12 minutes but Maryland scored the last six goals in a 4 1/2-minute span

FULL TIME After a perfect stall, Maryland advances to the final with a 14-5 win

57:49 UMD GOAL Aust puts the ball into the open cage after Syracuse is obligated to put in a goalie for a field player; score is 14-5

57:47 SYR RED A straight red has been assessed to Hogan for a dangeous check. Mollison was into the fan and Hogan flat ran over her. It’s the first time in the memory of most observers of a straight red. There are cases of second yellows and that green-red handed to Maryland’s Courtney Martinez in 2001, but a straight red is a singular event.

56:34 UMD GOAL McFadden seemingly cannot be stopped and the score is 13-5

56:03 SYR YELLOW Tumolo is suspended for a dangerous check

55:41 UMD GOAL McFadden tumbles in the Terps’ 12th goal

54:56 UMD GOAL Kristy Black takes a nice interior pass from Johnson and the Terrapins are in complete command of this game

54:28 UMD GOAL Johnson finishes off the break and the lead is back to five

53:34 UMD GOAL Schwartzman with her second and Maryland leads 9-5

51:00 Massive save by Hogan to keep her side in it

48:37 SYR GOAL Tumolo takes a
Ladoceur pass and makes no mistake; the Maryland lead is just three and there’s plenty of time left

43:21 SYR GOAL Tumolo scores to make it 8-4 and the fans sense a

39:51 SYR GOAL Dove cuts the deficit to five; is she the player to lead the charge?

38:30 UMD YELLOW McFadden is off for three minutes

31:46 UMD GOAL McFadden finds the top corner from a tight angle … she has the confidence to go to goal at any time

30:00 The second half is under way

HALFTIME Aesop once said, “The value of money is not in it’s possession, but its use.” The same can be said of ball possession here in the first term, where Syracuse had long stretches of possession, but got few good looks. Maryland also has gotten favorable matchups, forcing SU’s attacking midfielders to play an awful lot of defense and making the defenders possess the ball on clears instead of allowing Hogan to bypass them with a long outlet pass

HALFTIME The score is Maryland 7, Syracuse 2

29:57 Merrifield hits the post and Hogan should feel fortunate indeed

29:37 SYR GOAL Christina Dove gets a nice interior pass from Tee Ladoceur and the score is 7-2

28:51 Hogan gets lucky when she misses an interception and leaves a yawning cage that the Terps miss

24:39 UMD GOAL Mollison sees open teammates in the fan, but beats her cover point and makes the lead 7-1

22:15 UMD GOAL Caitlin McFadden, who’s had s good game on both ends thus far, isos on Quillinan, beats her around the corner, and makes it 6-1

20:48 UMD GOAL And just like that, Syracuse coughs up the clear and Mollison has a sitter: the lead is four

20:35 Hogan with a “Can you top this?” save for Syracuse

20:15 Dipper with a fine save for Maryland

18:45 UMD GOAL Johnson gets a lane to goal and puts it in the top corner

18:15 UMD FP and GOAL Merrifield from the center hash and it’s 3-1

17:08 SYR GOAL Halley Quillinan responds for the Orangewomen and the deficit is one

15:10 TV TIMEOUT that comes at a great time for Syracuse. There are six each half, at roughly 7 1/2-minute intervals

14:49 UMD GOAL After two bug saves and a groundball pickup, Hogan throws the ball on the back of the goal cage to start a Syracuse clear. But Karri Ellen Johnson swipes the ball when Hogan misjudges the throw and feeds Schwartzmann for an easy putaway

11:21 It would apppear as if Gary Gait is trying to dictate a slowdown pace to make Maryland chase the ball. Two shots in 11 minutes aren’t going to do it, though

7:19 UMD GOAL Laura Merrifield with a spectacular crease roll and shot over GK Liz Hogan and the Terps strike first

4:15 Syracuse is being extremely methodical now, spreeading the attack and gaining a FP that sails over the corner

1:27 Maryland hits the pipe on its first shot

0:00 The game is on

PREGAME The teams are warming up under an overcast sky with temperatures in the mid-70s. There is rain in the forecast but the radar has the precipitation well to the west of Towson.
