Sept. 7, 2011 — A correctable “whoops”

Today’s Game of the Day
Mamaroneck (N.Y.) at Bronxville (N.Y.)
If they can get this game in, it should be a dandy. Bronxville is trying to find its Class C championship form, while Mamaroneck is the two-time defending sectional champion in Class A.

One of the great things about digital journalism is the ease by which one can revise and extend remarks, as well as correct mistakes.

When I did last month’s video story on Alyssa Parker of Glenelg (Md.), I had mistakenly thought there were only three members of The 30-30 Club — scholastic players who had 30 goals and 30 assists in one season.

Turns out, however, there were at least four:

2005 — Chantae Miller, Williamsville North (N.Y.) — 42g, 35a
2009 — Aileen Johnson, West Long Branch Shore Regional (N.J.) — 31g, 32a
2010 — Corinne Allen, Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) — 33g, 32a
2010 — Alyssa Parker, Glenelg (Md.) — 38g, 38a

I say “at least,” because the vast difference in the quality of recordkeeping in field hockey over the last century means that there could be any number of people who have entered The 30-30 Club, but because their primary team, league, or newspaper never took assists, the information may be lost to history.

But that should not detract from the fact that Aileen Johnson and Alyssa Parker — both seniors this year — have done something very special. If you have a chance, go see Shore Regional and/or Glenelg play field hockey this season.
