Sept. 26, 2011 — Double duty

Today’s Game of the Day
Medford Lakes Shawnee (N.J.) at Summit Oak Knoll (N.J.)
Summit Oak Knoll (N.J.), the defending Tournament of Champions winner from New Jersey a year ago, is 4-0 with four clean sheets to begin the season, but the Royals’ schedule gets much tougher starting today. After today’s game with Medford Lakes  Shawnee (N.J.), there are two neighborhood derbies against Summit Kent Place (N.J.) and Summit (N.J.) before a Saturday tilt with Bridgewater-Raritan (N.J.). This week will go a long way to showing how resilient this program is.

Saw a dispatch describing a University of North Carolina field hockey game the other day, and noticed that Katelyn Falgowski was recording points for the Heels.

Wait, my brain was saying. Isn’t she supposed to be in Chula Vista with the national team?

Well, apparently, she’s doing double-duty with UNC and with the national team out of necessity. Since she’s already coming off a medical redshirt from last year, this fall is her final season of eligibility. She’ll soon be joining the U.S. camp in Colorado Springs for altitude training for the Pan American Games, then should rejoin UNC in time for an Oct. 30 reverse match at No. 1 Old Dominion.

UNC gave ODU one of its toughest matches of the season, bowing 3-1 on Sept. 16th. Needless to say, this rematch will say a lot about the rest of the Division I season.
