Aug. 22, 2012 — Preseason Statwatch for 2012

It’s time to get ready to start thinking about some of the statistical milestones that could be set this year. We have an outstanding goal-scorer in Lexi Smith, who is perched just 36 goals away from the all-time record for field hockey goals scored in a high-school career. If she remains injury-free at her usual pace of goal-scoring, she will likely break the record during a three-game home stand between October 8th and 12th, during which Florence (N.J.) Memorial will be playing Maple Shade (N.J.), Delran Holy Cross (N.J.) and Riverside (N.J.).

A few thousand miles away, Kate Barber of St. Louis Lafayette (Mo.) is only 26 assists away from Kelsey Smither’s record for a four-year career and needs 36 to break Chantae Miller’s all-time record, which had been set during a six-year career.

Oddly enough, a year after Alana Barry of Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) set the all-time record for goalkeeper shutouts, it is within the realm of possibility for Katelyn Arnold of Center Valley Southern Lehigh (Pa.) to approach that mark. If Solehi goes deep into the postseason, it may wind up playing 28 or 29 games this season.

Another interesting record could come in a team category. Yorktown Tabb (Va.) shut out its last 23 opponents of last year. Its first two games of the 2012 season should prove to be a supreme test: the Tigers host Virginia Beach Frank W. Cox (Va.) on Aug. 30th, then take on Virginia Beach Bishop Sullivan (Va.) after Labor Day. And on October 11th, the Tigers travel to Richmond (Va.) Collegiate School, aVirginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I finalist. If the shutout streak survives after those three games and their games against rivals Grafton and James Monroe, it will certainly have been earned.
