March 25, 2013 — Got to have Faith

Today’s Game of the Day
Potomac Bullis School (Md.) at West Springfield (Va.)
Assuming they don’t call this one off because of the snow in the mid-Atlantic, this is an interesting matchup between 2-0 West Springfield and an unlucky Bullis outfit. The Bulls are 2-3, but two of their three losses have been in overtime.

The Franklin & Marshall women’s lacrosse team was ranked eighth last week in the ILWCA poll.

Given what happened to the program a year ago, that is a near-miracle.

Last April, allegations of hazing within the team led to the suspension of 11 players, the dismissal of the entire coaching staff, and a vote by the team to not participate in the postseason.

But head coach Mike Faith has come in from Elizabethtown College and got the remainder of the team to buy into what he was envisioning for the program — putting a new offense and defense utilizing concepts borrowed from the men’s game.

The team is led by three seniors — Jen Noon, Maggie May Shields, and Lauren Selawski, the team’s tri-captains.

“They’re working the hardest at practice,” Faith told Lacrosse Magazine. “They’re pumped to get another year. It’s good to see them out there.”

Franklin & Marshall could have seen its 2013 schedule and up and quit, given the fact that it is loaded with opponents such as Salisbury, The College of New Jersey, and Cortland — not to mention its usual Centennial Conference rivals.

But the Diplomats haven’t quit, to their credit. They might be the single most dangerous team in Division III when the brackets are announced in a few weeks.
