June 17, 2013 — A baby step

Beginning today, and continuing for the next 10, a group of Pakistani field hockey players are on tour in the United States to participate in hockey clinics, leadership, and community development activities, according to the State Department’s website.

The twist in this tale is that the Pakistani youth team is all-female, including the addition of two women coaches.

In Pakistan, field hockey for women and girls, like many sports, is not seen as a priority in this conservative Muslim culture. Indeed while Pakistan’s men’s team is ranked No. 5 in the world, Pakistan’s women are currently unranked.

I’m hoping this trip proves fruitful to the Pakistani tourists, and gives the Pakistan Hockey Federation impetus to give more opportunities to women and girls in sport.
