BULLETIN: June 29, 2013 — USA 3, Spain 1

The United States women’s field hockey team was always going to be looking for scraps after its defeat at the hands of Australia on Thursday. Knowing that each and every placing in the World League semifinal round would be absolutely crucial in determining the Americans’ fate for the 2014 World Cup, a good finish in the tournament was essential.

And to that end, the United States’ offense woke up in a big way, scoring a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes to see off Spain 3-1 at Chiswick.

With the clock winding down in a tense duel, the United States earned a penalty corner which was flipped towards goal by central defender Rachel Dawson, who was all over the pitch today. Her high-low to Lauren Crandall was tipped high in the air, and in a bit of an exercise in self-preservation, was batted in about eye-high by Julia Reinprecht.

A few minutes later, Dawson got a fine reward for her work when she crushed in a goal from the middle of the blue striking circle.

The U.S. team, ranked 10th in the world, play Italy, an upset 3-1 penalty shootout winner over South Africa, in the fifth-place game on Sunday. The United States could still lose that match and make the World Cup if enough continental champions (to be determined over the next months) made the top three automatic qualifying slots from World League.

We’ll try to do the math early next week.

June 29, 2013 — The Harrow Experiment

Earlier this month, the inaugural Harrow Cup was played in Philadelphia, Pa., offering a cash prize of $10,000 to the winning team.

It was the first attempt at a women’s professional league in the United States, and it attracted nearly 400 hopeful players from 99 colleges to fill out the eight rosters.

Ultimately, the competition may become a proving ground for adult players who may have developed outside of the normal USA Field Hockey apparatus. Such a player was captain of the Tomahawks side in the Harrow Cup. Jamie Montgomery made her debut for the U.S. senior women’s national team in June 2013 in the semifinals of the FIH World League in London.
