BULLETIN: Nov. 12, 2014 — Austyn Cuneo completes a career feat

With a 13-0 win over Freehold (N.J.) Township in the NJSIAA Group IV field hockey semifinal this evening, the Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) field hockey team not only broke the national record for goals scored by a team in a season (now 242 and counting), but gave head coach Danyle Heilig her 400th career victory.

On an individual basis, senior striker Austyn Cuneo finished off a feat which is likely unequaled in the annals of scholastic sport. Yes, Cuneo not only has the record for most career goals (321 and counting), and also has the most consecutive matches scoring at least one goal (67 and counting).

But what she did yesterday, with a six-goal effort against Freehold Township, is set a new record for the most goals for a high-school senior, 88. She how holds records for all four high-school classes. Below is what we think are the high scorers by class are as of the close of play yesterday, understanding that there may be numbers which may not be known to this site:

Freshman Gls
Austyn Cuneo, Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) 69
Meredith Sholder, Emmaus (Pa.) 47
Lexi Smith, Florence (N.J.) Memorial 44
Sophomore Gls
Austyn Cuneo, Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) 68
Meredith Sholder, Emmaus (Pa.) 48
Lexi Smith, Florence (N.J.) Memorial 43
Junior Gls
Austyn Cuneo, Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) 98
Amie Survilla, Mountain Top Crestwood (Pa.) 64
Jessica Welch, West Long Branch Shore Regional (N.J.) 57
Senior Gls
Austyn Cuneo, Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) 88
Tracey Fuchs, Centereach (N.Y.) 82
Carol Middough, West Long Branch Shore Regional (N.J.) 78

Of all of the players whose teams remain active in their respective postseasons, Cuneo’s closest pursuer, Jessica Welch of West Long Branch Shore Regional, would need 31 goals the rest of the season in order to catch her.

Now, for some perspective. There are only a handful of people in the history of organized high-school sports in the United States, such as Catherine (Reddick) Whitehill in girls’ soccer, Michael Richardson in boys’ soccer, and Shannon Smith in girls’ lacrosse, who have led the nation in scoring more than once.

Cuneo is pretty much guaranteed to lead the nation in scoring four times. It’s a kind of grand slam that you may never see again.
