Serving the scholastic field hockey and lacrosse community since 1998

Feb. 24, 2015 — Curiously public

This space cannot make a judgment of guilt or innocence in the current controversy over the allegations leveled against San Diego Canyon Crest Academy (Calif.) head coach Rebecca Kingsbury.

What I find interesting is that the situation is such that those leveling the charges brought them to a very public forum last Thursday: a San Dieguito Union school board meeting.

Kingsbury has been a very successful coach in both field hockey and lacrosse at the magnet school, bringing the girls’ lacrosse team to the final of the CIF San Diego Section, earning the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Coach of the Year award last year, and being selected as one of 12 nominees for the 2013 United States Coach of the Year award.

Thus far, both sides have come out swinging, with parents and students accusing Kingsbury of bullying, and Kingsbury issuing a full-throated denial, saying, “I’m disappointed with the fact that a few families are willing to go to this length to attack my integrity.”

Given some of the hair-trigger firings of women coaches around the country for almost specious reasons over the last few years under mysterious and secret circumstances, I think it’s a good sign for Kingsbury that the fight is public. I get the feeling that the next meeting on which Kingsbury is on the agenda will feature a long line of players defending her.
