Serving the scholastic field hockey and lacrosse community since 1998

Oct. 30, 2015 — Friday Statwatch for games played through Oct. 28

Back now with Statwatch, our weekly journey across the nation to examine the statistics that define the season and the sport of field hockey.

This week, there were a pair of statistically significant events involving Pennsylvania’s Class AA teams. One, Mount Joy Donegal (Pa.), broke into the top dozen or so team goal-scoring performances of all time. The Indians, headed into last night’s game with Annville-Cleona (Pa.), had scored 177 goals. To give you a perspective on that mark, only four other schools have ever recorded more goals in a season.

In addition, Bree Bednarski, the brilliant senior from Exeter Wyoming Area (Pa.), tied the state scoring mark with 66 goals. That put her in a tie for ninth with Kelly Fitzpatrick of Palmyra (Pa.), headed into last night’s match against Mountain Top Crestwood (Pa.).

So, what is this amalgamation of red numbers below? These are stats reflecting games through the end of play on Wednesday. This means that it is entirely possible you might see something different in the column to the right, since Daily Statwatch (the orange numbers) is updated in, more or less, real time. I encourage coaches, athletic directors, and student managers to register for and use the MaxPreps.com platform, and we encourage you to get your fellow teams as well as perhaps your conference, confederation, or your state governing body to enter field hockey information there, so that we can aim for as complete a statistical picture of the country as possible.

Here’s what we’ve compiled thus far, thanks to, amongst others, MaxPreps.com, Advance Media, The Harrisburg Patriot-News, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, MassLive.com, The Washington Post, The Reading Eagle, Newsday, PhilaFieldHockey.com, and The Ann Arbor News:

So, this is what I’ve been able to find. Here is where you, gentle reader, come in. If you see a number or statistic that is errant or out of place, let us know — bearing in mind that the above is as of the close of play Wednesday. Feel free to send us an email at TopOfTheCircle.com. Give us a name or a bit of documentation (a website will do) so that we can make the adjustment. Thanks for stopping by, and we’ll see you in seven days.
