Dec. 19, 2015 — Detente or desperation?

It was announced this past week that there will be a second outdoor ice hockey game played Jan. 1 at Gilette Stadium. Before the Boston Bruins take on the Montreal Canadiens in the Winter Classic, there will be a women’s match between Les Canadiennes de Montreal and the Boston Pride.

Nope, not the Boston Blades that already play in the same league as the Canadiennes, but the Boston Pride from the NWHL.

It’s the first interleague game between the two rival hockey leagues, and, as such, may be more intense of a game between the two pro men’s teams. Both sets of players will not only be out to win to impress the selectors for upcoming national teams, but the Pride and the Canadiennes will be representing their respective leagues.

This never happened when the WNBA and the ABL existed at the same time. Nor has it occurred in any year there was a top division in women’s soccer: U.S. Soccer never created an Open Cup that would have allowed the WUSA, WPS, and NWSL to have matched wits with teams from the W-League or the WPSL.

I hope we get a chance to see this game and that it doesn’t get buried in the typical New Years’ Day programming.
