The latest IWLCA weekly poll for Division I women’s lacrosse poll is out. The top 5 teams resemble a child’s game of King of the Hill, since Maryland, the consensus No. 1 side, has beaten No. 2 Florida, No. 3 North Carolina, and No. 5 Syracuse thus far this season.
We’ve seen the games that Maryland has played against the rest of the Top 5, and only one of the games has been close: the Feb. 27 game at UNC, which finished with an 8-7 Terrapin victory.
We’re only a few days from the end of March, and there are only three unbeaten teams in Division I: Maryland, Cornell, and Southern Cal. The latter is a program which is only in its fourth season and coming off an NCAA octofinal round appearance a year ago.
USC may be undefeated this year, but I think the saga of the Women of Troy will be written in a seven-day span next month. In consecutive games, USC will be playing Northwestern, Notre Dame, and Stanford. All are ranked teams, all have their own perils. It should be an interesting lead-in to the MPSF Tournament, which will determine the AQ from the conference into the Division I championship.
