Serving the scholastic field hockey and lacrosse community since 1998

May 1, 2016 — The second part of the UWLX story

Today in northeast Philadelphia, some 85 postcollegiate women are vying for approximately 40 playing opportunities in United Women’s Lacrosse (UWLX), the semi-professional women’s lacrosse league which takes to the pitch in just four weeks.

The group of players are a combination of the undrafted, the has-beens, and the never-will-bes. But a number of them are going to latch on to one of the four rosters of the UWLX and improve their level of play, perhaps even to the point where they might break through to the high-performance level of U.S. Lacrosse, getting onto national team head coach Ricky Fried’s radar.

I’ve noticed that there were a number of superb players from the last few years who were not in the original draft pool for the UWLX, including game-changers like former UNC attacker Laura Zimmerman, former Northwestern defensive midfielder Taylor Thornton, former Maryland attacker Laura Merrifield, and goalies like Sarah Waxman (Penn), Kim Imbesi (Duke), Morgan Lathrop (Northwestern) and Kendall McBrearty (Virginia).

I don’t know the exact makeup of the player combine that took place today, but I do hope that some of these great players, and their peers, are brought into the league in future iterations.
