Friday evening, the Northwestern women’s lacrosse team posted a dominating 22-13 win over Ohio State in the final Big Ten Conference regular-season matchup for both sides.
But the most important thing for the Wildcats is that they are now 8-8 on the season heading into the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament later this week. The Cats are drawn against the University of Michigan, whom they beat 20-4 earlier this season.
Should the Wildcats win, they are guaranteed to have at least a .500 record by next week’s NCAA Tournament Committee meeting, since they can only receive at most one defeat during the knockout competition.
Then again, with the pressure of having that .500 record released, and the fact that the Wildcats are playing the Big Ten Tournament at home at the Lakeside, they are going to perhaps be the most dangerous team in the field because they will be playing free. Too, Northwestern won’t have to face top-seeded Maryland until the final.
And given what happened last year in the tournament, I don’t think the top seeds can rest easy this week.
