June 10, 2016 — Friday Statwatch for games played through June 3

Hi, all. It’s gotten really interesting in terms of the race for your national scoring champion for 2016.

Though junior Bridget Ruskey of Cape May Court House Middle Township (N.J.) retains the lead at 135, there are a couple of contenders still in play just eight goals adrift. Nora Bowen, the Virginia-bound senior from Purcelville Woodgrove (Va.), will be playing in the state final this Saturday at Liberty University. Sophia Turchetta, the Dartmouth-bound senior from Harvard Bromfield (Mass.), may have up to three matches left in her scholastic season; the Trojans play in the MIAA Central/West Division 2 final tomorrow.

Turchetta, of course, is the story here. She led the nation in goal-scoring in both 2014 and 2015, a feat that only a handful of players in field sports such as Catherine (Reddick) Whitehill and Austyn Cuneo have achieved. A third finish at the top of the national scoring chart would be an historic achievement.

Friday Statwatch reflects games through the end of play the previous Wednesday, so if something happened yesterday, it will go in next week (except for Daily Statwatch items, which get updated in the column to the right). If you are a coach or team manager, I encourage you to subscribe to, and enter information in, the easy-to-use MaxPreps.com platform, and we encourage you to get your fellow teams in your league or state high school association to enter their information there as well. We’re aiming to have as complete a statistical picture of the country as possible.

Here’s what we’ve compiled thus far, thanks to, amongst other sources, MaxPreps.com, Advance Media, The Harrisburg Patriot-News, The Providence Journal, The Albany Times-Union, Long Island Newsday, The Worcester Telegram, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, MassLive.com, the Denver Post, and The Washington Post:
