June 16, 2016 — A (necessarily) movable feast

One feature of the 2016 United Women’s Lacrosse (UWLX) fixture list was that the games would be held in conjunction with a number of summer lacrosse events, presumably with ready-made audiences of youth players and parents.

There were exceptions. The July 9 match weekend features separate games at a pair of high schools: Lincoln-Sudbury (Mass.) and Westtown (Pa.) School.

But there was announcement made this week that the third match weekend of UWLX would be also be distributed amongst two sites.

At noon Saturday will be the top-of-the-table clash between the Boston Storm and Long Island Sound, and that match will remain at Marlton Cherokee (N.J.) in conjunction with the National Draw.

But the other game, between the Philadelphia Force and the Baltimore Ride, is being moved to St. Joseph’s University. Part of the aim of the game is to bring the professional game to the city. But it is also going to serve as a fundraiser for the Eyekonz Field Hockey and Lacrosse League, an organization which aims to expose young women in the city of Philadelphia to these athletic endeavors.

Jazmine Smith, founder of Eyekonz, has made a breakthrough already amongst the public-school ranks: Philadelphia Strawberry Mansion (Pa.) took the lacrosse field this spring, and the field hockey program at the same school is scheduled to begin in the fall.

Despite your Founder’s management instincts in terms of wanting to make sure the UWLX has the maximum exposure to go along with recognized youth lacrosse events, and to have predictable scheduling, I think this is a groundbreaking idea by UWLX, to expose the professional game to north-central Philadelphia and to have an equipment drive for Eyekonz.

And, of course, one of these two teams will have to earn its first victory of the inaugural season. That should be enough reason to go and see the game.
