Serving the scholastic field hockey and lacrosse community since 1998

Aug. 18, 2016 — NCAA Division II preview

East Stroudsburg
West Chester

A year ago, East Stroudsburg rose above the rest in Division II in order to win its first national field hockey title. The Warriors will be hard-pressed to repeat, given the fact that the team’s inspirational figure, leading scorer Ally Roth, has graduated. Desirae Mack (10 goals, 2 assists) is the leading returning goal-scorer.

Champions two years ago, Millersville is primed for another run to the final. The leading returning scorer is sophomore Aliza Mizak (10-2), who only had one start a year ago but should be one of the leaders in all areas of the pitch this fall.

I believe West Chester is also a team that can be very dangerous come tournament time. The Golden Rams’ top-three point scorers return: Rachal Toppi (24-2), Marnie Kusakavich (16-6), and Dayle Paustian (14-10).

You also cannot count out Adelphi, which adds transfers Justine DeLuca (Dowling College), and Madison Skelton (Suffolk Community College) to a pretty good lineup. Skelton is an interesting story in and of itself, as Suffolk doesn’t have a team. In fact, it has been a decade and a half since an American junior college fielded a field hockey team.

Shippensburg was a very young team a year ago, and will look to build on its experience of last year. Leading the way is junior Emily Barnard (9-5), who led the squad in scoring last year.
