This afternoon, the 44th annual Apple Tournament commences in Louisville, Ky. with a pool match at Horton Field pitting Louisville Collegiate (Ky.) against Louisville Assumption (Ky.)
It is the traditional beginning of the American scholastic field hockey season, and this year’s Apple includes not only perennial power and host Louisville Sacred Heart (Ky.), but it also includes a number of the Valkyries’ main rivals, including Louisville Dupont Manual (Ky.), and Louisville Mercy (Ky.).
As much success that Sacred Heart has had in this early season tournament, however, it’s any guess as to who will win the KHSAA tournament at the end of the season; the state championship in Kentucky is incredibly unpredictable, and it could fall to an “outsider” team to win it.
And with the opening whistle this afternoon, a maelstrom of competition across 28 states and the District of Columbia will begin, and I think this could be an unpredictable season. More on that soon.
