Serving the scholastic field hockey and lacrosse community since 1998

Oct. 7, 2016 — Friday Statwatch for games played through Oct. 5

Welcome back to Friday Statwatch, our weekly look at the numbers that define field hockey and that make an attempt at defining greatness across generations.

This week’s most statistically significant event was the fact that Skowhegan (Maine) Area field hockey coach Paula Doughty crossed the 500-goal barrier on Tuesday. She is the 32nd known member of the 500-win club, and the second to get to 500 this season, following on the achievement of Debbie Bross of Bethlehem Moravian Academy (Pa.).

But it isn’t just the fact that she is the first field hockey coach from the state of Maine to win this many field hockey games, but it’s the panoply of stories that a career of this nature has created. One story written in tribute to her made mention of Skowhegan’s first state title game in 1991, which was decided in the final in a penalty-corner tiebreaker that lasted 26 rounds. That tidbit is now reflected in our Rebel Project, alongside with some marathon tiebreakers that have occurred in the past.

What you see below reflects games through the end of play on Wednesday. We’re hoping that each of you can adopt the easy-to-use MaxPreps.com platform, and we encourage you to get your fellow teams to enter their information there as well as whichever is your local news site, so that we can aim for as complete a statistical picture of the country as possible.

Below is a combination of stats from, amongst others, MaxPreps.com, PhilaFieldHockey.com, Advance Media, The Harrisburg Patriot-News, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, MassLive.com, The Washington Post, The Lancaster New Era, The Reading Eagle, and the Ann Arbor News:

We’re not so sure that some of these numbers are right, so if you see something out of place, let us know — bearing in mind that the above is as of the close of play Wednesday. Feel free to send us an email to us at TopOfTheCircle.com. Give us a name or a bit of documentation (a website will do) so that we can make the adjustment. Statwatch is meant to be better than a static piece of newsprint; nay, it is a living document that we can add to at any time.

Thanks a lot for reading, and we’ll see you next time.
