Nov. 11, 2016 — Friday Statwatch for games played through Nov. 9

Good morning, and happy Friday!

As a panoply of games take place in Virginia today, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey tomorrow, we note that there are a number of sports seasons which will end in the next couple of days. But we can’t get a sense of how well the individuals and teams are doing until next week’s Statwatch.

That being said, I think the most statistically significant event of the last week was the fact that we now have two members of the 40-40 club — that is, 40 goals and 40 assists in a season — for the second year in a row.

Meredith Sholder, the fine senior from Emmaus (Pa.), had four goals and four assists in a first-round PIAA state tournament game against Buckingham Central Bucks East (Pa.). That puts her in some rarefied air as only the second player in National Federation history to have 40 goals and 40 assists in a season twice. In addition, she needs just three assists to be all by herself in second place all-time in career assists. She’s already second all-time in goals with 215.

Also hitting the 40-40 club this week is sophomore Mackenzie Allessie of Mount Joy Donegal (Pa.). She crossed the 40-assist barrier during last Saturday’s PIAA District 3 Class AA final against Elverson Twin Valley (Pa.).

To give you some perspective on this, I think the only players to have done this before Sholder a year ago were Laree Beans of Emmaus (Pa.) and Haley Schleicher of Virginia Beach First Colonial (Va.).

This feature reflects statistics through the end of play on Wednesday. We’re hoping that each of you can adopt the easy-to-use MaxPreps.com platform, and we encourage you to get your fellow teams to enter their information there as well as whichever is your local news site, so that we can aim for as complete a statistical picture of the country as possible.

Below is a compilation of stats from, amongst others, MaxPreps.com, PhilaFieldHockey.com, Advance Media, The Harrisburg Patriot-News, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, MassLive.com, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Lancaster New Era, The Reading Eagle, and the Ann Arbor News:

So, here’s where you, gentle readers, come into the picture. If you see something that needs a correction, please free to send us an email to us at TopOfTheCircle.com. Just keep in mind the fact that Statwatch is meant to reflect play up to the close of Wednesday. Give us a name or a bit of documentation (a website will do) so that we can make the adjustment. Statwatch is a malleable entity which can be edited at any time.

Thanks for dropping by, and we’ll try to do better next week.
