Nov. 18, 2016 — Friday Statwatch for games played through Nov. 16

Welcome back to Friday Statwatch, our weekly look at national field hockey statistics, the numbers that link the present to the past.

This week’s most significant statistical happening is the fact that ten players have breached the 50-goal barrier this season, which is believed to be the most ever in one field hockey season. It’s just more evidence of runaway scoring in American field hockey in recent years. When you think about it, only 26 50-goal seasons had been documented up until 2010. Since the beginning of the 2011 season, there have been 35. In just six years.

Each of these players has an interesting sidebar or characteristic beyond their ability to put the ball in the goal cage. Take, for instance, Jillian Shive of Cincinnati Ursuline (Ohio). She not only has scored 52 goals this season and 130 career, but in her scholastic career she’s been credited with 26 defensive saves. Yes, she is an attacker, but she has been a crucial post defender, putting in the time and dedication in this role for the Field Hockey Life club as well as for the Lions.

Sammy Popper, the precocious sophomore from Fort Washington Germantown Academy (Pa.), is one of five underclasswomen in the pool of 50-goal scorers. She has also, with 56 goals, become the all-time single-season goal-scorer in the five-county Philadelphia area, which is saying something because of the game’s history in the counties of Bucks, Chester, Montgomery, Delaware, and Philadelphia.

This feature reflects statistics through the end of play on Wednesday. We’re hoping that each of you can adopt the easy-to-use MaxPreps.com platform, and we encourage you to get your fellow teams to enter their information there as well as whichever is your local news site, so that we can aim for as complete a statistical picture of the country as possible.

Below is a compilation of stats from, amongst others, MaxPreps.com, PhilaFieldHockey.com, Advance Media, The Harrisburg Patriot-News, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, MassLive.com, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Lancaster New Era, The Reading Eagle, and the Ann Arbor News:

OK, gang. We need your help here. If something above is wrong, send us an email to us at TopOfTheCircle.com. Just keep in mind the fact that Statwatch is meant to reflect play up to the close of Wednesday. Give us a name or a bit of documentation (a website will do) so that we can make the adjustment. Statwatch is a feature which we can correct at any time, either from a desktop machine or on the mobile phone.

Thanks for reading today, and we’ll try it all again in seven days.
