Serving the scholastic field hockey and lacrosse community since 1998

Dec. 22, 2016 — A major change for UWLX

Thirteen months ago, we wrote this.

Today, this happened.

I’ll refer to my article: “(Michelle DeJuliis) is … a pretty good person to get behind any effort to professionalize women’s lacrosse in the U.S.”

The problem now, for the league, its players, and potential investors, is that the energy that she has brought to her play and her presence around the game of lacrosse is going to be absent this coming spring.

For a fledgling league that did so many things right — a low-cost league with events coinciding with major youth tournaments, with teams located in major hubs of lacrosse — the changing of the commissioner is fraught with peril. Women’s leagues have rarely stuck with the same leadership year over year in the last 20 years. The WNBA, for example, is on its fourth commissioner. Women’s top-tier soccer is in its third league.

I’m hoping for great things this coming summer, and I hope you get to see some of the action. Apparently, a schedule has been drawn up, and we’ll find out more about the league’s direction perhaps as soon as the National Lacrosse Convention in Baltimore next month.
