Apr. 8, 2017 – Owings Mills McDonogh (Md.) 11, Olney Good Counsel (Md.) 5

POSTGAME That’s all for now; have a good evening

POSTGAME Jenner was ridiculous in the draw circle; she won nine of 11 in the first half, 15 of 18 overall. She benefitted by the new Federation rule which prevents anyone except the three midfielders in between the 35s to play the ball until someone secures possession. Aldave was extremely effective as Jenner’s wing player on draws, vacuuming ground balls like magnets

POSTGAME Hoffman came through on an afternoon where other players were being frustrated by the Good Counsel defense

POSTGAME That being said, McDonogh’s aggressive defense was an enormous factor; the marking was comprehensive and, frankly, smothering

POSTGAME For the consensus No. 1 team in the country, this was a workmanlike effort against a quality side which had a good goalie and good defense

FULL TIME Horn sounds; Eagles win

50:00 Good Counsel hits the top corner, but the umpire rules that the ball entered the cage after the clock hit zero

49:30 Falcons run their offense, but Cooper makes the stop

47:45 Jenner tries to score off the stall but finds Forman

46:48 MCD FP and GOAL Hoffman scores from the center hash; it is her third of the game and stakes McDonogh to an 11-5 lead

46:45 GC YELLOW Graham off for the rash challenge; it is Good Counsel’s second team yellow

43:00 Judging by the spread, it looks like an all-out stall

42:45 Jenner wins the draw — again — and now it looks like a spread offense. Is it a full-out stall or a stall-to-score?

42:30 MCD FP and GOAL Maddie Jenner from the center hash; Eagles lead 10-5

41:15 MCD FP Aldave air-mails her shot from the center hash

39:40 CG GOAL McDaniels with her second but the deficit is at four goals

39:11 MCD GOAL Andie Aldave takes a May pass and buries it; McDonogh leads 9-4

34:00 MCD FP Catie May is stopped by Forman!

33:20 MDC FP Hoffman’s shot is wide!

32:11 MCD GOAL Aldave from the right wing as the DeRose penalty is still in effect; McDonogh leads 8-4

31:18 MCD FP and GOAL Jenner gets instant revenge from top dead center; Eagles up 7-4

31:16 GC YELLOW Grace DeRose is off for the cross-check on Jenner; her first yellow, team’s first yellow

30:00 GC FO Cooper with the save!

28:49 MCD YELLOW Anna Robinson off for the cross-check; her first, team second

25:00 The second half is under way

HALFTIME I believe McDonogh has another surge in them, though. They need an error-free half

HALFTIME Forman has done an admirable job against the Eagle attack, but it must be said that McDonogh has made some mistakes in the final third, including a couple of charges

HALFTIME The Eagles are holding on to a two-goal lead, mainly on the back of a stifling man defense; it looked like, on a couple occasions, the McDonogh players wanted to go guard their player on the bench

HALFTIME The horn sounds with McDonogh leading 6-4

24:36 GC GOAL Ioanna Mantzouratos scores while being checked! Falcons to within 6-4

22:28 MCD FP and GOAL Julia Dorsey with a fallaway from top center; Eagles lead 6-3

21:39 MCD GOAL Emma Schettig with a speed move into the arc! Eagles up 5-3

20:43 GC GOAL Halle Graham runs the iso along the left baseline and puts it over Cooper; Falcons now within one

17:00 McDonogh wins the next draw and runs out the penalty

16:52 GC FP and GOAL Taylor McDaniels from top dead center; McDonogh still leads 4-2

15:48 MCD YELLOW Rachel Anderson is off for a check to the sphere; her first yellow and the team’s first

12:07 MCD GOAL Hoffman cuts onto the crease and shoots over the goalie! McDonogh leads 4-1

9:58 MCD GOAL Andie Aldave with an open shot off a Hoffman pass; Eagles up two

8:56 GC TIMEOUT An unusual early timeout, but I think this is Michael Haight emphasizing the way he wants the offense run; the Falcons have had some possession in the attack end but at times have not been able to get good shots on Cooper

7:39 MCD GOAL Anna Robinson takes a recycled pass from Catie May and finishes! McDonogh leads 2-1

6:52 MCD GOAL But Hoffman redeems herself off the restart, scoring from 10 yards out; game tied 1-1

6:30 MCD FP Julia Hoffman misses from the left-center hash

3:47 GC GOAL Kayla Rieu gets a step and shoots high into the corner! Falcons lead 1-0

1:35 MCD FP Jenner false-starts and it is Good Counsel ball; you don’t see that often

0:00 The game is on

PREGAME Good Counsel is in the white with gold numbers and kilts; McDonogh is wearing battleship gray with white numbers and orange trim

PREGAME The teams are warming up under partly cloudy skies, temperatures about 58 degrees with a light breeze

PREGAME Good Counsel will have senior Katie Forman, an aggressive goalie who can pick off lazy passes, in the goal cage and Taylor DeRose on the circle, and both need to be at their best today

PREGAME This game, I believe, hinges equally on goaltending and the center draw. For McDonogh, the center is Maddie Jenner, whose abilities are well-documented. Julia Cooper has been playing well lately for McDonogh replacing the graduated Gabbe Cadoux

PREGAME Likewise, McDonogh has a tough non-conference schedule. The first weekend of the season, the Eagles played Vero Beach (Fla.), Milton (Ga.), and Vaughn Hill Academy (Ont.)

PREGAME Good Counsel is an excellent side, and has built its program on being unafraid to play the best. The Falcons’ lone loss this season was to Rosemont Agnes Irwin (Pa.)

PREGAME McDonogh, Class A champions of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland, is 9-0 this season; Good Counsel, of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference, is 7-1

PREGAME Hello, and welcome to the Ridley Athletic Complex of Loyola University Maryland for this interconference lacrosse showdown between Owings Mills McDonogh (Md.) and Olney Good Counsel (Md.)
