June 2, 2017 — Friday Statwatch for games played through May 31

As the games wind down, you usually see teams with high scorers fall by the wayside as teams which have scouted them have figured out a way to neutralize the biggest threat.

But something unusual has been happening. Those teams with stat-sheet stuffers are beginning to go deep into the state tournament. This coming weekend, for example, Jamie Ortega, the star senior from the combined Newfield (N.Y.) and Centereach (N.Y.) co-op team known as Middle Country, is playing in the state quarterfinals on Sunday at Adelphi University’s cozy stadium.

In addition, Ally Mastroienni of Bridgewater-Raritan (N.J.) has brought her team to the Group IV state championship. Oddly enough, the Panthers’ opponent in the state final for lacrosse is their field hockey nemesis, Voorhees Eastern (N.J.).

The statistical eye, however, should be focused on the southernmost high school in the state of New Jersey. Cape May Court House Middle Township (N.J.), a team with three of the more prolific scorers in the history of girls’ lacrosse, is playing for a state title tomorrow. Middle Township features Allison Hunter, who is only eight assists from tying the all-time record for assists recorded in a career. The team also features Jenna Herlihy, who not only is a 400-point scorer in lacrosse, but also put together a fine field hockey career last fall, scoring 146 goals — the 19th highest total of all time. Lest we forget, there’s last year’s national scoring champion Bridget Ruskey, whose 484 goals is fourth all-time.

Here’s where you come in. If you see something missing (and I know there has to be someone missing from the above; I seem to find new people every week), feel free to send us an email at TopOfTheCircle.com. Give us a name or a bit of documentation (a website will do) so that we can make the adjustment.

Thanks for reading, and we’ll try this all over again next week.
