Aug. 1, 2017 — One more mountain

The month of July 2017 has seen the U.S. women’s field hockey team winning its way into the 2018 FIH World Cup, the women’s lacrosse team winning the FIL World Cup, and the gold medal in the World Games.

We’re celebrating with the wallpaper of our website and our header, but there’s one more task that could be completed in the month of August. And that’s for the U.S. men’s field hockey team to try to win the Pan-American Cup.

The men’s Pan Am Cup tournament starts this weekend at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim Township, Pa. and features the best eight men’s teams from North and South America.

The United States, a young, scrappy, and hungry team featuring players who train largely on their own and do not benefit from the infrastructure that the women do, are the highest-ranked team in the tournament that has not already qualified for the 2018 FIH Men’s World Cup. The States are 26th, just one place ahead of Chile.

Argentina, the world’s No. 1 ranked men’s field hockey team, is in the tournament with 11th place Canada. Both have qualified for the World Cup next year. But no matter how well the USA or Chile do, they will not make the field for the World Cup if they don’t win this tournament outright.

The mission is clear; the path is clear. But can the U.S. men qualify for an FIH World Cup for the first time? Stay tuned.
