Aug. 4, 2017 — Argentina 6, USA 0

MANHEIM, Pa. — The beginning of the 2017 Pan American Cup saw the host American men’s field hockey team taking on Olympic champion Argentina.

And in the end, Argentina had too much class, too much inventiveness, too much skill, running out 6-0 winners in a contest in which the Albicelestes were actually shut out for two quarters.

But everything you needed to know about the gulf in rankings between the States (No. 26) and Argentina (No. 1) took place in the second quarter. That’s when the tournament favorites knocked in four goals in a shade under 12 minutes, turning the area in front of goalie Brandon Karess into a shooting gallery.

The United States’ door to qualification for the FIH Men’s World Cup next year isn’t closed, but the Boys in Blue need to right the ship in time for Sunday night’s game against Venezuela. The United States needs to finish in the top two of Pool A in order to make the semifinal round.

That’s because only the winner of the tournament gets to go to India next year for the World Cup; if that winner is anyone other than Canada or Argentina, then that team goes. If Argentina or Canada wins, New Zealand, a sixth-place finisher from the Hockey World League semifinals, gets to go.
