Aug. 5, 2017 — USA 6, Mexico 0

With only one roster change from the team that won the FIH World League semifinal tournament in South Africa last month, the United States women’s field hockey team announced to the rest of the Pan American Hockey Federation that it was going all-in on trying to win the Pan American Cup.

And that’s bad news for the rest of the field. The U.S., playing a relentless style from the beginning of the game until the end, trounced Mexico 6-0 at Spooky Nook.

Indeed, if there was one objective for the coaching staff coming into the tournament, it was to exhibit a variety of scoring. Jill Witmer was the leading scorer for the Applebees in the World League semifinal round, and she had a goal last night against El Tri.

But the aspect of the game that seemed to get into gear was penalty corner conversion. After having little success at Johannesburg, the States knocked in five off 16 chances. In addition, Kat Sharkey, who led the nation in scoring the year her Princeton Tigers won the NCAA title, notched a hat trick, which can only help her confidence going forward.

The United States take on Canada on Monday night and the winner of that game all but clinches a berth in the semifinals later in the week.
