Aug. 8, 2017 — An ending which is hopeful on one end, predictable on the other

This past May, the athletic department of the University of Iowa had to capitulate after losing a discrimination lawsuit which was filed by former athletic director Jane Meyer. The capitulation, which cost the university more than $6 million, also covered lawsuits filed by former field hockey coach Tracey Greisbaum, who had been fired just weeks before the start of the 2014 season.

The athletic director at Iowa, Gene Barta, has not only been allowed to keep his job, but his position has been permanently endowed through a $5 million donation by a pair of wealthy donors.

Greisbaum has been out of collegiate field hockey since the summer of 2014, but, three years on, joins a team in the nation’s most competitive field hockey conference, the ACC. Today, it was announced that she was going to be joining Duke as a volunteer assistant coach.

Given the amazing talent currently on the roster and those joining the squad this year, this is a propitious time for Greisbaum in her coaching life. I get the feeling that Duke is going to benefit greatly from her tutelage.
