Oct. 20, 2017 — Friday Statwatch for games played through Oct. 18

Hi, everyone. Welcome to Statwatch, our weekly roundup of field hockey statistics nationwide and what they mean.

This week, I’m taking a look at the nation’s single-season goal-scoring list, since junior Mackenzie Allessie is making her second appearance in the Top 10. Though she scored her 69th goal in a defeat at the hands of Millersville Penn Manor (Pa.) in the semifinals of the Lancaster-Lebanon League Tournament, there is one lens through which you should view these list of high scorers. And that’s through the lens of state championship success.

When you look at the top 12 single-season goal-scorers in the history of the game, all but one of them won the state championship (or in California’s case, a sectional title) the year they set the mark:

96 Austyn Cuneo — Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) won 2013 NJSIAA Group IV title
95 Austyn Cuneo — Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) won 2014 NJSIAA Group IV title
82 Tracey Fuchs — Centereach (N.Y.) won 1983 NYSPHSAA Class A title
81 Megan Rodgers — San Diego Serra (Calif.) won 2016 CIF San Diego Section Open title
78 Carol Middough — W. Long Branch Shore Regional (N.J.) won 2013 NJSIAA Group I title
76 Mackenzie Allessie — Mount Joy Donegal (Pa.) won 2016 PIAA Class AA title
69 Austyn Cuneo — Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) won 2011 NJSIAA Group IV title
69 Kelsey Mitchell — Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) won 2009 NJSIAA Group IV title
69 Nikki Santore — Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) won won 2015 NJSIAA Group IV title
69 Michelle Vizzuso — North Caldwell West Essex (N.J.) lost 1994 NJSIAA Group II title
69 Mackenzie Allessie — ??
68 Austyn Cuneo — Voorhees Eastern (N.J.) won 2012 NJSIAA Group IV title

One could argue that having a talismanic scorer of the same caliber as in the list above is a curse for a team rather than a blessing, because all a team has to do is either mark her out of the game or cut the cord between her and the rest of the team. Like Lacey (N.J.) Township did a quarter of a century ago that fateful afternoon at Lions Stadium, Penn Manor showed again on Tuesday that it is possible to beat a team with an unstoppable scorer, although this week’s game was not for a state championship.

So, below are field hockey statistics from available sources. This includes, amongst others, amongst others, Advance Media, PennLive.com, LancSports.com, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, PhilaFieldHockey.com, and the Washington Post. It also includes the easy-to-use MaxPreps.com tool, and I encourage readers to contact their coaches, athletic directors, and student managers so that they may register for and use the MaxPreps.com platform, and we encourage you to get your fellow teams as well as perhaps your conference, league, or your state governing body to enter field hockey information there, so that we can aim for as complete a statistical picture of the country as possible.
