Jan. 3, 2018 — Curious omissions

Last weekend, a couple of rosters for the U.S. Olympic team were named, including the women’s ice hockey team.

It’s a team which, pretty stunningly, will not have veterans Megan Bozek or Alex Carpenter on it.

These last two cuts were first reported by The Grand Forks Herald on Dec. 21st and were borne out by last weekend’s public announcement at the Winter Classic in New York.

The roster for the Olympics had originally been announced last April, but the team was augmented by three additions in October. It’s notable, however, that the States are 0-4 since the addition of Cayla Barnes and Haley Skrupa from Boston College, and Sidney Morin from Minnesota.

But, what the mix of players gives head coach Robb Stauber is a pool of flexible players who can be put on the ice at any time. The Herald breaks down the current roster as one with 11 forwards and 9 defensemen, at least two or three who have experience up front.

And in a short tournament, flexible is the way to go.
