March 2, 2018 — Death by 260 lawsuits

This week, it was announced that former U.S. gymnastics star Aly Raisman would be filing a multimillion dollar lawsuit against former team doctor Larry Nasser, USA Gymnastics, and Michigan State University. The suit is not only for Nasser’s years-long molestation of the gymnast, but for USA Gymnastics’ and MSU’s complicity in keeping the scandal quiet over the years.

Raisman and McKayla Moroney already have lawsuits in the pipeline, and I’m sure there are going to be more. There could be more than 260 victims in this situation, and there could also be more defendants as well.

Imagine the size of the litigation with not only each individual lawsuit, but the processes by which they will eventually have to maneuver through a court of law.

Needless to say, whether the payouts in each lawsuit are a few hundred thousand dollars or in the millions, the number of victims could multiply the award, representing an amount which could bankrupt either USA Gymnastics, Michigan State University, or both.

Think of that for a second. That’s how big this story is.
