April 8, 2018 — Summit (N.J.) 10, Summit Oak Knoll (N.J.) 9, OT

Yesterday’s girls’ lacrosse showdown between Summit (N.J.) and Summit Oak Knoll (N.J.) was a game which needed little buildup, given the fact that these two schools, located less than a mile apart, have been amongst the small handful of schools to win the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions.

In addition, Oak Knoll has had the whip-hand over Summit the last year or so, with wins in the Union County Tournament final as well as last year’s Tournament of Champions semifinal.

But yesterday, Julia Szynal provided the final margin of victory on an overtime free position to give Summit a 10-9 win. Szynal, a junior, also some pressure-packed goals in regulation, including an EWO goal with less than five minutes remaining that gave the Hilltoppers an 8-7 lead.

Though Summit was able to stake itself to a pair of two-goal leads late in regulation, Oak Knoll was able to pull back twice to get to level terms. Annabelle Zebrowski was responsible for the last of the tie scores, connecting in the last minute of regulation to level the match at 9-9.

With the game riding on the opening draw control of overtime, the match officials, in a twist, ordered a redraw when the first draw resulted in the ball going over the sidelines. The redraw fell to Oak Knoll, but Summit stole the ball before the Royals could get in their offensive set, leading to Szynal’s overtime goal.
