May 14, 2018 — How not to set up a bracket

During the play-in rounds of the 2018 NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse tournament, there were two games when the losing team scored three goals or fewer, and two games where the losing team scored 18 goals and lost.

There were two overtime games on Friday in the prelims, while Sunday’s octofinal games were never in doubt in the final 10 minutes; the smallest winning margin of the eight games was three goals.

Friends, this not the way to run an NCAA Tournament.

I’m hoping for better things in the quarterfinals this coming weekend, especially the 4-5 game between Stony Brook and Boston College, the teams which held down the 1 and 2 positions in national polls until mid-April.

The shame is, only one will make it to Lavalle Stadium in two weeks for lacrosse’s Final Four.
